Benson Plant Rescue volunteers will present a gift of $1,000 to Omaha Public Library Executive Director Gary Wasdin and Omaha City Councilmember Pete Festersen (District #1) on Saturday, Sept. 11, 9 a.m., Benson Plant Rescue, 3103 N. 50th St. The money will be used to fund enhancements, collections and programming expenses for the Benson Branch. |

Author Kim Louise will speak at the Sister to Sister Book Club about her writing of stories with soul and spice on September 11, 1-3:30 p.m., at Charles B. Washington Branch, 2868 Ames Ave. She is a hopeful romantic and has written 10 romance novels and five romance novellas for Kensington/BET Books, Genesis Press and Harlequin. |

During a lazy day of fishing, a father asked his young son a seemingly harmless question, “Do you know where this water goes?” Several years later, the boy, his brother, and two friends set off on a 1,400 mile canoeing voyage to find out. Three decades later, their inspiring and heartwarming tale has been captured in the book, “This Water Goes North” by Dennis Weidemann. On September 13, 7 p.m., at Millard Branch, 13214 Westwood Ln., Mr. Weidemann will present a slide show of the expedition and discuss his book. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing. |

Expansion and renovation of Omaha Public Library’s Florence Branch, 2920 Bondesson St. has begun. To complete the renovation, the Library will be closed for approximately three months beginning September 1. During this time, limited services will be available in the senior center of the Florence Community Center. The temporary location will be open 33 hours per week, Monday-Thursday, 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. Services will include access to public computers, pick up of materials on hold, and a small selection of bestsellers available for checkout. To access full library services, customers may use the Charles B. Washington Branch at 2868 Ames Ave. or any of the other 10 library locations. |

Librarians in our nation’s 123,000 libraries make a difference in the lives of millions of people every day. Here in Omaha, that can include helping a child pick her first chapter book, or showing a senior how to set up his email account. If a librarian has made a difference in your life, now is the chance to tell your story.
The Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award encourages library users to recognize the accomplishments of librarians for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community.
Nominations will be open from August 2 to September 20. |
